Symptoms of a Bad Carburetor – What To Look For
Symptoms. When we are sick, these are the signs that we look to so we can diagnose our illness. The same can be true when it comes to our vehicles. While each vehicle has it’s own issues, sometimes we are able to look at typical issues that can help us diagnose our vehicle’s “illness”. A concern that we might have, is if our vehicle has a failing carburetor. Since carburetors are the main source of air and fuel flow to our engine, it is a key component. So if the carburetor is failing, we really need to take it seriously. What are some symptoms we can look to?
- Black smoke. It goes without saying that we are always concerned when smoke comes out of our exhaust. If we notice black smoke, this is a sure sign that our engine is running too much fuel or that it is too rich. This should be a concern because unnecessary fuel is burning along with an excessive amount of emissions.
- Hard starting. Since the carburetor is responsible for the fuel and air flow to the engine, if this is compromised, the engine will not run properly. So if we are beginning to notice that our vehicle isn’t starting up the way that it should, this is something we need to take seriously.
- Overheating. Your Mechanic says, “If the carburetor has any sort of issue that results in it delivering a lean mixture, a mixture that does not have enough fuel, it may result in engine backfiring or overheating.”
